Bricasti reporting continuing sales success
of remarkable Model 7 Stereo Reverb
Processor at San Francisco AES Convention
Recent deliveries to leading scoring mixer Alan Meyerson, Grammy® Award-winning
engineer/producer Al Schmitt, and TV-music mixer Barton Michael Chiate.
Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco: At the 125th AES Convention, which opens here today and runs until October 06, Bricasti Design will be providing details of recent system deliveries to a wide cross section of recording, TV broadcast and mastering facilities. The company remains committed to the international pro-audio industry; Bricasti Model 7 Stereo Reverb Processors are in service with most of the world’s premiere music and film-sound recording studios, broadcast companies, post production and audio mastering facilities.
Recent system deliveries include:
· Leading scoring mixer Alan Meyerson, who is using not one but six M7s Stereo Reverb Processors. “Sure, plug-ins are okay,” he offers,” but I need a world-class external reverb for creating realistic-sounding ambiences and reverberant spaces for my motion-picture soundtracks. As soon as I heard the new Bricasti Model 7 I knew that I had found what I was looking for. I’m so impressed with this powerful unit that I ended up purchasing a total of six Model 7 Stereo Reverb Processors. They sound amazing!” Meyerson recently completed soundtracks for Iron Man with composer Ramin Djawadi, and the animated feature Kung Fu Panda; upcoming releases include The Dark Knight, with joint composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, and X-Files. The engineer/producer spends much of his time at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica, CA.

Meyerson recalls that his first evaluation session with the Bricasti Design Model 7 came during an orchestral session. “Compared to my [reference external reverb] the Model 7 provides additional depth and size - it was, as I can best describe it, a more complete sound. The reverb tails, in particular, are clear sounding and more full. As a result I discovered that I needed less reverb, which means that it doesn’t muddy the orchestral tracks. For me, the M7 sounds better, wider and fatter.”
Meyerson specified a total of six Model 7 Stereo Reverb Processors because of a need to prepare separate 5.1-channel surround sound for the movie soundtracks on which he works. “I might use, for example, three units on string elements and another three on brass: the first Model 7 for left and center, the second for right and center, and the third for surrounds. And for conventional stereo sessions, I might need to prepare as many as six separate stems.
“It’s a perfect solution, with a great user interface,” Meyerson says. “The Model 7 features four front-panel quick-recall buttons that let me access my favorite settings in an instant, with lots of programmable user registers and resets as well.”

· Grammy® Award-winning Al Schmitt, who recently used an M7 during sessions at the landmark Capitol Recording Studios with singer Natalie Cole. “The M7’s clarity and ease of use are outstanding,” the engineer/producer states. “On muted brass, trumpets and vocals, in particular, the Model 7 is unmatchable. For me, it’s a major breakthrough!” The upcoming CD project, tentatively entitled Unforgettable II, was scheduled for release in August.
Schmitt’s first experience with the Model 7 came during tracking sessions with Natalie Cole. “I had borrowed a unit from Summit Audio [Bricasti Design’s exclusive US distributor] to try out on the dates. I liked the reverb processor so much that I ended up purchasing one for myself. An external reverb like the Bricasti Model 7 is perfect for the way I work. I can quickly store and recall settings via the user-friendly front-panel layout.”

Schmitt is a 19-time Grammy Award-winning engineer/producer who has worked on landmark albums for Jefferson Airplane, George Benson, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Dr. John, Barbra Streisand, Steely Dan and Toto, plus scoring work with Alex North and Elmer Bernstein. Career highlights include engineering both of the Frank Sinatra Duets albums, Ray Charles’ Genius Loves Company and all of Diana Krall’s albums. He has recorded and mixed over 150 Gold and Platinum albums, and in 1997 was inducted into the TEC Hall of Fame.

· Music mixer Barton Michael Chiate, who is using an M7 on classical-guitar CD releases and the Jimmy Kimmel Live TV show. “It is so easy to use and produces remarkable results,” he enthuses. “The Model 7 is also cool-looking. It’s my Go-To Reverb!” Chiate first heard the Model 7 at the NAMM Convention two years ago. “I was looking for a powerful reverb system for my TV-mixing and recording projects, and the Model 7 blew me away. I decided on the spot I had to have one! Unfortunately, the prototype I’d heard was the only unit in existence, and it resided at Boston Symphony Hall. Bricasti graciously arranged for me to borrow it for a week to finish a recording project. I purchased the very first production model. I won’t use anything else on my projects. The Model 7 has the smoothest-sounding reverb tails I have ever heard - its decay is just so natural! For Jimmy Kimmel Live, the M7 is my first choice for vocals, drums, guitar and horns.” Chiate uses three interlinked Yamaha 02R96 digital consoles to mix music for the show, with a 48-track Steinberg Nuendo DAW and a Tascam X48 for multitrack backups.

In addition to mixing sound for Jimmy Kimmel Live during the week, Chiate handles a number of recording sessions for such artists as Pepe Romero, a best-selling classical-guitar virtuoso. “I needed a great-sounding reverb to liven up tracks and match ambiences,” the producer-engineer continues, “. The past two projects were recorded in Pepe’s condo in Del Mar, California. We wanted to use the sanctuary at the Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside [south of Los Angeles], which offers a wonderful ambiance, but Pepe’s schedule made that impractical. After we were done editing, I decided to use the Mission as a natural reverb. I played the album back through a loudspeaker out into the sanctuary and miked the reverberant sound. The Mission’s sanctuary is quite large and offers a very long RT60. It sounded great, but the guitar didn’t seem to naturally sit inside the space. To provide a mid-size ambiance I turned to the Bricasti Model 7. It provided the perfect ‘glue’ that bonded the instrument and the room together.”
“The Model 7’s front panel is very easy to use,” Chiate says. “I’m not a rocket scientist; I prefer simple interfaces. The M7 lets me get to what I need quickly and simply. On a high-energy show like Jimmy Kimmel Live I don’t have time to scroll through menus and play with settings; the presets are very powerful and let me get to the sounds I need without a fuss.” The M7’s minimalist yet elegant user interface offers a total of 15 Parametric Program Parameters and 50 User Registers; four front-panel “Favorites” enable quick saves and A-B comparisons.
