Mixer/engineer/producer Dave Reitzas
praising Bricasti Model 7 Stereo Reverb
for its outstanding sonic performance.
“It easily and instantly transports me into the most beautiful spaces I could ever imagine.”
Los Angeles, CA: Renowned for his infectious optimism, attention to detail and commitment to making each session run smoothly for artists and producers, Dave Reitzas is regarded as an engineer intent on delivering high-quality recordings every time he works in the studio. His work is characterized by a degree of integration that requires a range of processing tools. His choice for a new outboard reverb unit was easy: a Bricasti Model 7 Stereo Reverb Processor. “Outboard reverb provides a unique sound that I’ve yet to hear from a plug-in,” the seasoned engineer considers. “High-end dedicated hardware reverb offers a lot more processing power than I find with most DAW plug-ins resulting in exceptionally robust algorithms that deliver the rich, full enveloping sound that I strive for.”
“The first time I tried out the Model 7 it was very obvious that something magical was happening – the M7 provides instant gratification. It’s not very often that equipment comes along to instantly translate the sounds in my head through to the speakers, but the M7 does just that … and more. It easily and instantly transports me into the most beautiful spaces I could ever imagine.”
Reitzas first utilized an M7 on the David Foster & Friends DVD and CD project, Hit Man, which features icon artists performing Foster’s songs. The concert was recorded live by Dave at the Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas. “I fell in love with the M7 in the Hit Man mix sessions, and then used it while tracking Seal’s new record Soul in Studio ‘A’ at Capitol Studios, Hollywood. I also borrowed a unit from Summit Audio [Bricasti’s exclusive US distributor] late last year for a new client’s project of just piano and strings that I was mixing at The Record Plant in Hollywood. I had worked half a day with other reverbs before the Bricasti arrived at the studio, and when I added it to my mix – I knew right then that it was time to have my own M7!
“The choice of ambience is one of the most important decisions I make during a mix session – it creates the environment in which the music is being cast and I think that’s what is most appealing to the listener. With the M7, each different algorithm has its own special strength, providing a large palette of starting points that work very well on a variety of material.”
Growing up in Fall River, MA, Reitzas started his musical life as a drummer with big rock and roll ambitions; by his mid-teens he was getting calls from local bands to help them out in local studios. He took an engineering class at Bristol Community College, before attending the University of Rhode Island and Berklee School of Music. Wanting to discover more about the art of recording he moved to California in 1984 to attend the Institute of Audio Video Engineering in Hollywood.
His first job after graduation was as a runner at Cherokee Studios, which led to positions at Sound City and then Rumbo Recorders. Things moved fast for Reitzas and in 1987, he was hired by multiple Grammy-winning producer/songwriter David Foster to engineer for him which resulted in a fruitful full time eight-year working relationship, during which time Reitzas met many of the Artists that have added to his extensive discography including Madonna, Streisand, Whitney, and Celine. After becoming a freelance engineer in 1995, Reitzas continued on projects with Foster (Josh Groban and Michael Buble) and also spent many years working with producer/songwriter Walter Afanasieff (Mariah Carey, Kenny G, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton). “I’m very fortunate to be associated with such talented and musical producers and artists who have had such an influence in contemporary pop music.”
While continuing his work as a first-call studio engineer, Reitzas’ Emmy®-winning success with Barbra Streisand’s Timeless: The Millennium Concert led to live-concert engineering and mixing. He is also the proud recipient of four Grammy® Awards for his work on Madonna’s “Ray of Light”, Luis Miguel’s Mexico En La Piel” (also Latin Grammy®), and Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable.”
