BOB BERT FROM INT'L SHADES SELECTS TANGERINE MASTERING FOR NEW 12-SONG "LUV & TERROR" CD PROJECT, PLUS VINYL AND MP3 TO FOLLOW

Weehawken, NJ: Tangerine Mastering recently completed a CD project for Bob Bert, the legendary drummer from Sonic Youth and who now heads up his own band, Int'l Shades. Handling the Luv & Terror CD project was Andreas K. Meyer, who used Tangerine Mastering's vintage Neve, SPL and EMI hardware, in addition to the facility's Merging Technologies Pyramix DAW for editing and sequencing. "The session went very well," Meyer offers. "Bob liked the tracks that we produced for him, and may return later for a vinyl and MP3/AAC remastering session." Tangerine Mastering is a state-of-the-art mastering facility dedicated to providing its customers with the ultimate experience. The new facility is conveniently located just minutes from downtown Manhattan by car, bus or ferry, across the Hudson River at the Lincoln Tunnel. 

"I chose to work at Tangerine because I have known [co-owners] Roger Johansen and Gene Holder for many years, and like the way they work." Bert confides. "The new album for my four-piece band, Int'l Shades, is our first on Gifted Children label. It comprises 12 songs with singer/synth player Alexa Wilding, bassist Tim Foljahn, ex-Live Skull guitarist Mark C. and myself on drums; Mark and I co-produced the project, which we recorded at local Brooklyn and Williamsburg studios.

"I love the sound that Andreas [Meyer] produced on the project. It has the tight, punchy sound we need - he gave it a greater body! Tangerine Mastering is a great place to work."

"Having loaded the 24/96 tracks into a Digidesign ProTools rig I replayed them through our outboard Meitner high-precision D-to-A converters," Meyer says. "That way I could re-equalize and re-compress the material in the analog domain using our collection of vintage Neve, SPL, Pultec and Cinema equalizers plus Universal Audio dynamics units, and finally through our Abbey Road EMI Mastering Chain. Although the original tracks sounded great, mastering involves that essential magic that makes them sound consistent and adds subtle punch and enhances the overall level. The results, I think, are outstanding!"

Owned by Roger Johansen and Gene Holder, bass player for The db's, Tangerine Mastering was designed by famed acoustician John Storyk of the Walters-Storyk Design Group. The working environment combines close proximity to midtown Manhattan within an artist-run production arts building that houses sound stages, recording studios, post production suites, independent record companies and college radio promoters. "We strive to provide a relaxed professional musical environment that enhances the final product," Holder acknowledges.

Lead mastering engineer at the new facility is Andreas K. Meyer, who has worked with such renowned artists as Hilary Hahn, Joshua Bell, Yo Yo Ma, Essa Pekka Salonen, Arcadi Volodos, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic and The Boys Choir of Harlem. His credits as producer/engineer and composer span hundreds of CD releases. Meyer has received numerous Grammy(r) Awards, including Mastering Engineer in 2000 for Best Historical Album: Louis Armstrong - The Complete Hot Five & Hot Seven Recording.

Having joined experimental rock band Sonic Youth during the early- to mid-Eighties, Bob Bert played on such releases as Confusion Is Sex, Sonic Death and Bad Moon Rising. He then served as percussionist for Pussy Galore, as well as their splinter group Boss Hog. In the early-Nineties, he drummed for the Chrome Cranks and then joined forces with guitarist Kid Congo, guitarist Jack Martin, bassist/vocalist Jerry Teel and organist Barry London in the New York City band Knoxville Girls. Throughout this period, Bert released a handful of recordings by his percussive/concussive vehicle Bewitched, and in the late-Nineties began publishing BBGun, a fanzine that primarily covers punk rock.
